GAINS is a research project delivered by WARIAN SRL within the RESTART Program Spoke 7 - Green and Smart Environments that focus on AI-driven automation, standardized deployments, measurable sustainability KPIs
Network and cloud infrastructures keep growing in complexity, while energy constraints and sustainability requirements become first-class engineering targets.
GAINS designs an agent-based system that integrates heterogeneous data (configurations, SLAs, processes, real-time telemetry) to produce safe, auditable actions.
Reduced over-provisioning and operational overhead through predictive monitoring and standardized deployments, enabling measurable energy and carbon efficiency KPIs.
GAINS provides automated decision support for complex telco/cloud operational workflows by integrating heterogeneous inputs (configurations, SLAs, delivery processes, service portfolio, and real-time telemetry) to produce standardized deployments, technical documentation, and predictive monitoring outputs
The system splits a complex operational workflow into specialized agents that cooperate through a shared knowledge base and controlled interfaces with human oversight (human-in-the-loop) or autonomously for pre-approved procedures.
Network Monitor
Predictive monitoring of network/cloud infrastructure efficiency and sustainability (energy, CO₂ emissions, resource utilization). It processes telemetry, environmental sensors, and external sources to detect inefficiency patterns, anomalies, and optimization opportunities, supporting over-provisioning reduction, dynamic resource allocation, and environmental compliance audits.
Network Orchestrator
Automated and optimized service deployment for telco and cloud. It reduces configuration time and manual errors, ensuring consistency with best practices and policy constraints. It synthesizes data from network devices, cloud environments, delivery processes, and corporate policies to generate standardized, adaptable configurations that can be approved or adjusted by operators.
Knowledge Manager
Automated creation and maintenance of technical/procedural documentation aligned with policies and SLAs. It produces operational manuals, compliance reports, troubleshooting guides, and deployment documentation, keeping artifacts consistent with infrastructure and policy changes by leveraging configuration repositories and contractual inputs.

GAINS is developed within the Italian national programme RESTART (PNRR — NextGenerationEU), supporting applied research that connects operational excellence with measurable sustainability outcomes in telco and cloud infrastructures. RESTART is funded under Italy’s PNRR plan within the EU’s NextGenerationEU framework, translating European recovery investments into concrete research projects with measurable impact.
GAINS is aligned with the Do No Significant Harm (DNSH) principle and aims to make sustainability indicators actionable at the operational layer through standardized deployments, predictive monitoring, and up-to-date technical documentation.
GAINS is an open, dissemination-driven research effort. The team welcomes collaboration opportunities, technical discussions, and invitations to conferences or workshops.
